Revolutionary War History: New Dorp became the ‘new village’ for dutch settlers on Staten Island in 1671, replacing Old Town  as center of life. The town was an important part in the American revolution and island development. In the summer of 1776, Sir William Howe and his brother, Admiral Richard Howe brought 40,000 soldiers to camp in New Dorp.  There was an important meeting at the Conference House, Tottenville which was with Benjamin Franklin and John Adams with the hope of averting a war.  This was an important attempt, but failed and the colonies went to war with England. Staten island was a England supporter in the beginning of the war, but more people became patriots as the war went on.
